Facilities Development and Management seeks a Fire Alarm Technician
to install, test, maintain, perform shutdowns, modify and repair
fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, and other fire systems.
This involves low voltage systems and networks related to fire
alarms and sprinkler systems, security systems, and access control
systems along with the central monitoring station.
Salary Range
$23.12 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with
the State of Arizona.

Essential Duties
Analyzes blue prints, schematics, and drawings of fire alarm,
sprinkler, and other related electrical systems for the purpose of
determining the efficient installation of new or upgraded systems
and to properly identify current systems.
May plan the layout and perform installations of new or remodeled
alarm systems.
Performs preventative maintenance and inspections of fire alarm
components, systems, and related equipment which includes:
starting/stopping equipment, system testing, general cleaning,
removing/installing serviceable parts, identifying problems and
needed repairs.
Examines, tests, troubleshoots/diagnoses and completes necessary
repairs to alarms, sensors, system wiring, and computerized alarm
monitoring systems, alarm communication network, and fire/emergency
system devices.
Creates various reports that are used to document the operation of
Fire Alarm Systems.
Views electrical layouts contained on the builder's blueprints to
determine the appropriate fire alarm system and ensure compliance
of electrical and fire codes.
Assists with maintenance of computerized fire monitoring
systems.
Provides cost estimates for system installation to requesting
departments.
Installs fire alarm system components as assigned (e.g. panels,
audible/visual alarms, pull stations, detectors, etc.) for the
purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded system
capabilities.
Reviews the fire alarm work of outside contractors (e.g. new school
sites, fire system upgrades/expansions, major remodels, etc.) for
the purpose of ensuring that the projects are completed and are
within local/state/federal codes, regulations and
specifications.
Communicates with other trades (e.g. plumbing, electrical) to
complete projects/work orders; works with ASU Fire Marshall to
ensure completion of inspections.
Records and documents activities performed to convey information to
co-workers and requesting departments.
Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the
purpose of assisting emergency responders and to resolve immediate
safety concerns.
Uses ability to clearly communicate to perform essential
functions.
DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) years of electrical and/or fire alarm/security systems
experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or
education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities
have been achieved. NICET Level I Certification. Employee may be
required to possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate
class and required endorsements throughout employment. Candidates
must be able to respond to calls outside of normal business
hours.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in:
working with fire and security alarm systems, computer hardware and
software programs.
programming fire alarm systems in order to perform trouble shooting
and resolution.
working with a variety of fire alarm systems.
programming and troubleshooting of Computer and Device Networks
Demonstrated knowledge of:
NFPA 72 and NFPA 25 fire alarm systems and central station systems
testing and maintenance.
Simplex, Edwards EST 3, JCI, FCI, Notifier system, DACT dialers,
and DACR central station receivers.
Evidence of:
NICET level II or higher Fire Alarm Systems Certification.
Fire & Life Safety Technician or General Electrician
Certification.
Professional membership in the National Fire Protection Agency
(NFPA).
Effective communication skills
Working Environment
Lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 75 pounds, some
climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching,
and/or crawling; and using significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45%
standing.
The job is performed under temperature extremes and in a generally
hazard free environment and occasionally in confined spaces.
Hand and power tools, ladders, Fire System related testing
devices.
Safety/protection devices such as half-face respirators and fall
protection equipment.
May use standard office equipment including, but not limited to:
computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer,
fax, calculator, copier, telephone, two-way radio and associated
computer/technology peripherals.
May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and
equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific
process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal
Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing
protection, negative pressure and positive pressure
respirator).
Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

Facilities Development and Management at ASU employment requires

This position is located at the Tempe campus.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D)
upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of
employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving
record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month
period from date of hire.
This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a
specific source other than general operating funds. As such, this
appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer
available.
This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by
schedule, performs shutdowns which may be outside of normal working
hours, and may be called in for emergency response including
nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of
employment to include respiratory clearance questionnaire and
respiratory fit test.
