Job DescriptionSummaryJob DescriptionBD Peripheral Intervention (BDPI), a division of BD, is responsible for sales revenue in excess of $1+ billion dollars globally. The position is located in Tempe, Arizona and reports directly to the Director of Research & Development - Innovation. The role is accountable for fostering innovation through, needs finding, new idea generation, early-stage technical risk reduction, and participation in due diligence activities within R&D as they relate to BDPIs division.Essential Job Functions:Under the direction of the Director of R&D for BDPI complete all required activities as assigned to further R&D innovation programs and objectives.Works with a start-up business mentality to identify new business opportunities, build business cases, provide technical solutions and prove or disprove the viability of the technology and business case. Serve as R&D lead on idea phase technical projects and ensure timely completion of milestonesDrive the R&D aspects strategic assessments to recommend new areas for the PI business to enter or to identify potentially interesting acquisition targerts.Work with cross functional team members, external stakeholders, and business R&D leaders to plan projects, develop budgets, and define deliverables and timelinesSeek, source, and evaluate new technologies in support of business strategic initiativesInterface with outside collaborators to define projects and ensure successful completion of deliverablesProvide clear and timely communications, including written reports, oral presentations, and status updates to internal and external stakeholdersStays up to date on the latest technological advancements both within and outside BDPIs existing disease states.Coordinate interactions with key academic and business players in the fieldHelp drive a culture of innovation within BDPI across R&D and all cross-functional teamsActively foster innovation through participation in leading activities such as lunch and learn or clinical case presentations, assisting with the annual innovation contest, or working to increase quality Invention submissions within BDPI.Work collaboratively with business development to conduct technological assessments and make go/no-go recommendationsWork to reduce risk and appropriately evaluate the potential of new ideas by evaluating initial technical risk, and potential mitigations through prototyping, testing, and providing recommendations on the path forward. Additionally, this position will be tasked with helping modeling potential operating expenses for new programs as part of the financial assessment. Submit IDRs, new product ideas, etc. and actively contribute to funnelWorks collaboratively with BD patent attorneys on development, review and assessment of technical feasibility of invention disclosures.Acts as a liaison and BDPI spokesperson for various local universities, organizations and medical societies.Understand and utilize the Stanford Biodesign process for needs identification and new product development. Ability to develop clinical and economic value propositions.Understanding of the reimbursement landscape for the BDPI business.Work hand in hand with upstream R&D New Product Development teams to assess and develop new technological solutions and to ensure a smooth transition of these technological solutions into the new product development teams. Must be knowledgeable of design control and validation methods required of medical device development and manufacturing.Work effectively with all other functional areas including, but not limited to, Marketing, Clinical, Sales, Business Development, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Regulatory Affairs.Collaborate with the Marketing and Sales departments to assist and determine customers needs and drive development of future technologies.Foster and sustain a culture of collaboration, inclusiveness, curiosity and agility.Supervisor/ManagementResponsibilities:This role does not have any direct reports but may lead small teams to evaluate new ideasFiscal/BudgetaryResponsibilities:This role will be required to help track individual spend against an approved budget and to propose budgets for technical assessment projects as appropriate.Customer and Key Contacts:R&DMarketingBusiness DevelopmentSalesClinicalRAQualitySupply ChainOperationsBasic Skills/Competencies Required: Strong interpersonal skills and sound administrative knowledge.Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization from Senior Management to technicians.Education Required:Bachelors degree in Engineering or related technical field. Advanced degree/training is preferred.minimum of 10 years direct responsibility for engineering or product development in a cross-functional team environment.Experience in Medical Device industry2-3 yrs experience working collaboratively with business development.Experience Required:Prior project management experience leading a technical group to support complex new product development efforts with broad responsibilities from idea to launch. Previous medical device experience is preferred. Demonstrated strong leadership, interpersonal skills and sound administrative knowledge.Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization from Senior Management to technicians.Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, controls and office equipment. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.
