Job Description: The Associate General Counsel is responsible for
providing a high level of professional legal service by
representing and advising the Arizona Board of Regents and Arizona
State University on a broad range of legal matters in the higher
education sector. This position is within the ASU Office of General
Counsel (OGC) transactional practice group, which concentrates on a
variety of complex transactional matters including complex
commercial transactions, business formation and structures, global
and national operations, finance, including public finance and
other legal matters. The group provides legal advice and counsel on
state and federal laws, applicable regulations, and Arizona Board
of Regents (ABOR) and ASU policies impacting the university;
assists with the development of educational training programs for
administrators, faculty, and staff; manages a significant and
varied workload including working on multiple unrelated matters
concurrently and completing complex projects both independently and
with minimal direction; utilizes excellent judgment and discretion
as well as exceptional integrity and research and communication
skills. This position interacts regularly with senior level
administration and with state, local, and federal regulatory

. Essential Duties Drafts, negotiates, and reviews agreements and
other legal documents relating to the work of the transactional
group for various University offices and departments. Provides
legal counsel and prepares legal opinions and advice for
administrative offices and academic units based on an analysis of
applicable federal and state law and regulations, ABOR policies and
University policies. Advises on regulatory compliance with federal
and state laws, including those governing business transactions
managed by the transactional group. Represents ASU in negotiations,
administrative proceedings, and legal disputes. Researches and
analyzes a wide variety of laws, regulations, legislation,
legislative history and policies; studies proposed or existing
legislation for implications to the University Assists in
development and presents a variety of preventive law programs for
the University. Collaborates with outside legal counsel on
specialized matters as needed. Represents the Office of General
Counsel at meetings and conferences, as required. Maintains
effective working relationships with appropriate regulatory,
legislative and other legal resources. Assumes other duties as may
be assigned. Desired Qualifications Evidence of a J.D. degree from
an ABA accredited law school and six (6) years of experience as a
practicing attorney with a focus in higher education, complex
commercial transactions, business formation and structures, global
and national operations, and/or public finance. Experience working
in a diverse and complex, high volume environment. Experience in
the active practice of law which is current and continuous and with
a demonstrated ability to structure, negotiate, and draft complex
agreements relevant to a complex and entrepreneurial public
research university. Evidence of strong, effective verbal and
written communication skills. Knowledge of legal issues affecting
large public research universities, including regulatory
compliance, contractual relations, and policy development. Working
Environment Work is performed in a standard office environment
subject to prolonged periods of sitting and operation of computer
equipment requiring keyboarding. Travel to other offices at the
Tempe campus and other ASU campuses or locations is required. Some
out-of-state and overnight travel is required. Department
