Position description
Functions as an interdisciplinary team member that performs a wide
range of services in clinic and hospital-based laboratories.
Performs venipuncture, collects blood, and provides appropriate
post-care of phlebotomy site. Prepares various specimens for
analysis while maintaining positive patient identification.
Collects specimens and performs specimen processing in a safe,
accurate, and professional manner. Performs order entry as needed,
retrieves and verifies patient collection data and patient special
notations using appropriate sources. Cooperates with coworkers in
the completion of assignments and sets priorities for specimen
collection. Employs standard precautions, infection control, and
proper isolation techniques.
Qualifications
Must have a minimum of completed a phlebotomy externship or Mayo
Clinic clinicals and/or 1 year or more of laboratory, specimen
handling, processing, and/or phlebotomy experience or combination
thereof.
Graduation from an accredited phlebotomy or medical assisting
program required with completion of a phlebotomy externship.
Must have High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Additional qualifications
Strongly prefer candidates with phlebotomy and central processing
experience.
Must demonstrate strong specimen processing, handling, and
accessioning background.
Must demonstrate strong excellent communication skills and
attention to detail.
Proven ability to effectively work in a team atmosphere, but
ability to work independently.
MUST have positive attitude.
Must show evidence of proper technique and etiquette for answering
the telephone and providing information, and patient
interaction.
Must demonstrate proven ability to deal effectively with people in
stressful situations.
Must demonstrate excellent computer skills, familiarity with EMRs,
knowledge of medical terminology, and prior exposure to clinical
medicine and pathology environment.
Familiarity with lifespan growth and development, basic anatomy and
physiology.
Internal applicants are required to attach their three most recent
performance appraisals.
