In partnership with the Center Director, the Associate Director of Research (ADR) provides scientific oversight and management of a portfolio of sponsored research projects, develops, implements and evaluates long- and short-range research goals and objectives for the Center in support of its mission: advancing technologies that manage carbon on a global scale by capturing CO2--directly from ambient air, converting CO2--into fuels and products or sequestering it forever, modeling CO2--transport, conversion and storage, and modeling techno-economic and life cycle processes to ensure commercially viable and sustainable carbon management technologies. The ADR's primary purpose is to grow the research enterprise for the Center by identifying and prioritizing funding opportunities from a wide range of sponsors (e.g., NSF, DOE, DOD, foundations, industry) and then working with Center faculty and the Director to envision and develop innovative and competitive research initiatives that expand the Centers research portfolio. In addition, the ADR serves as the primary point of contact between the Center and ORSPA/KE, driving new initiatives related to Center portfolio growth and preparing executive summaries for the Center Director. ADR fosters and enhances cooperative working relationships with researchers in the Center, department/school, and throughout ASU; and those external to the Center, including academic, industry and national laboratory partners. ADR represents the Center in research related matters internally, with other ASU offices and externally with national and international collaborators.

This is an associate level incentive position with the potential of earning more for meeting and exceeding your funding goals. The total target compensation potential for this position (Base Annual Salary + Incentive at Funding Goal) is at $125,000 per year.--This requires knowledge of--PhD-level research design principles and methods,--effective written, verbal and visual communication skills, the ability to--develop, write, evaluate and submit many winning scientific proposals and effectively implement strategic scientific programs.   • Assists Center Director in building and maintaining Center faculty, capabilities and collaborations with partners from academia, industry and national laboratories.
  • Executes strategic plans for research development, through coordination, communication, data analysis, and assessment.
  • Carries out comparative analyses to support executive decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Supports and encourages Center faculty in identifying appropriate extramural research funding opportunities and establishing key win themes.
  • Develops, integrates and manages interdisciplinary research teams, concepts, content and proposals.
  • Critically reviews proposals from Center faculty and provides comprehensive feedback to improve quality and competitiveness.
  • Consults with team members to identify strengths, challenges, and prospective options with the goal of submitting the most competitive proposals.
  • Monitors and evaluates progress of research initiatives in coordination with faculty, academic leadership, and research administrators/advancement staff.
  • Facilitates technical discussions and provides intellectual contributions to research across broad technical areas.
  • Coordinates research training programs and workshops for faculty, staff and students in the Center.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Supports Center Director with all necessary tasks to enable the success of the Center and--represents the Center on behalf of the Center Director as needed. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment. Desired QualificationsDemonstrated knowledge of:

      • planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities
      • establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
      • leading and directing organizations in the performance of innovative, complex functions
      • budget preparation and forecasting
      • coordinating--with faculty in schools, departments, and centers to advance research initiatives
      • developing, writing--and submiting many winning scientific proposals, including large, complex proposals
      • putting team first and incorporate ideas from other faculty
      • discerning the merit and scientific value of research projects and proposals
      • setting--and articulating--clear expectations; define and assign proposal development responsibilities and timelines; and coordinate with research advancement staff to ensure all deadlines and quality controls are met
      • understanding, integrating--and editing technical proposal content to ensure it produces a cohesive and compelling story to meet a sponsors needs
      • managing--diverse scientific and engineering teams (up to 30 faculty), seting schedules, track items to completion and facilitate team communications
      • successfully manage multiple externally funded projects to meet sponsor needs and enable follow on research funding
      • working independently in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively in interdisciplinary scientific teams and mentor researchers
      • navigating--a fast-paced cross-functional and collaborative work environment
      • effectively managing, supervising--and evaluating--assigned staff
      • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
      • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
      • Ability to clearly communicate--to perform essential functions.
